The radar answer to Trillions of Gallons. NOAA's
MRMS mosaic paints the country at 1 km every two minutes — so instead of waiting hours on an analysis, we can add
up what is hitting the ground while it is still falling, and what has landed over the last hour, day or five days, for every
county and Census urban area in the Lower 48. Each panel carries the frame it was read from and how old that frame is: usually
three or four minutes. Depth in inches, volume in gallons, and the wettest single hour of the period.

Why the short windows matter. Five-day totals tell you how wet the ground is; a single
violent hour tells you whether the storm drains could keep up. Flash flooding is a rate problem — an inch in an
hour over pavement runs off almost entirely, while the same inch spread over a day mostly soaks in. These are the
area-average peaks for the whole county or urban area, so an individual gauge inside one can read far higher.
